There are several factors that are considered before the Neurontin dosage of a patient is determined. Such factors are include the age of the patient, the weight and the condition being treated. For example, before a doctor prescribes medicine to a child, he has to consider the weight of that child. It is generally recommended that children who are above 12 years and adults should start with a Neurontin dosage of 300mg. Other medical conditions that a patient may have may determine what type of treatment and the dosage that one may be prescribed.
Patients should not adjust the dosage unless after being directed by ones health provider to do so.
Neurontin is used for patients with epilepsy and the starting Neurontin dosage that is recommended so as to control partial seizures in adults and teenagers who are more 12 years old is 300 mg this is to be taken three times daily. If required, one’s doctor may increase the dosage, to a limit of 800 mg three times every day, until the seizures can be controlled.
For children below 12 years that is, between the ages of 3 to 12 years old, the correct dosage should be calculated. This calculation is usually based on the weight of the child. This is for epileptic children and dosage may be increased as the child continues growing. This is because higher doses may be required to control the seizures. It should be understood that Neurontin can be used on its own or together with other medications for seizures. A kidney patient may be prescribed a dose, which is much lower.
In the treatment of post herpetic neuralgia, one can start with a Neurontin dosage of 300mg that is taken only once on the first dose on the second day, an additional 300mg dose is taken. The total number of grams taken on the second day is 600mg while on the third day it is 900mg. This is taken two times and three times respectively. In case of excess pain, a higher Neurontin dosage may be prescribed. There are certain considerations to keep in mind before prescribing any Neurontin dosage.
This is because one may prescribe a wrong dose for a patient in the following circumstances:
- That if it is in the form of a tablet or a capsule it is usually taken orally and should be taken three times daily.
- There is a Neurontin solution for those patients who may have difficulty swallowing the capsules or tablets.
- Neurontinin may upset ones stomach and therefore should be taken with food if one notes that there is a problem.
- To maintain a constant amount of Neurontin in one’s blood, it should be taken at exactly the same time one took the last dose.
- If there are any side effects, the solution does not lie in discontinuing the prescription of the medication and therefore, patients could talk to their health providers so that their concerns can be addressed. If one stops taking the medication, the condition that was being treated becomes worse.
